PagerDuty

One of the original on-call alerting and incident response platforms, now marketed as an end-to-end Operations Cloud.

What it is

PagerDuty is one of the longest-established on-call alerting and incident response platforms, built around routing an alert (from a monitoring tool, a metric threshold, or a manual trigger) to the right person through escalation policies and on-call schedules until someone acknowledges it. Over time it has expanded well beyond paging into a broader “Operations Cloud”: status pages, automated runbooks, AIOps-driven event correlation, and post-incident workflow, positioning itself as end-to-end incident lifecycle software rather than just an alerting layer.

Why teams choose it

  • Mature, battle-tested escalation and scheduling. On-call rotations, overrides, escalation chains, and integrations with virtually every monitoring tool are deeply built out, reflecting the product’s long history as the category’s default choice.
  • Broad integration ecosystem. PagerDuty integrates with most metrics, logging, and APM tools out of the box, so it’s rarely the limiting factor when connecting alert sources.
  • AIOps event correlation for noisy environments. For organizations with many overlapping alert sources, PagerDuty’s correlation features aim to reduce duplicate or related alerts into a single actionable incident.
  • Pricing complexity at scale. Costs are typically structured as a per-seat subscription with several separately priced add-on modules (AIOps, advanced automation, live call routing), so the effective cost per user can be substantially higher than the advertised base tier once a team needs those modules.

Pricing model

PagerDuty uses per-user subscription tiers with escalating feature sets, plus separately priced add-on modules for AIOps and automation; an alternative “Operations Cloud” packaging bundles a platform fee with purchasable usage credits instead of pure per-seat pricing.

Alternatives

incident.io is the most common modern alternative, built Slack-first with a lighter, more opinionated workflow. Keep is the leading open-source, self-hostable alternative for teams that want to own their alert-routing layer rather than pay per seat. Grafana Cloud IRM is a newer commercial option from Grafana Labs aimed at teams already standardized on the Grafana stack.
